Currently, the PlayStation Move remains Sony's hottest ticket on the market, and we expect to see this virtual reality technology enhanced in the PS4. Right now, the Move uses a motion-sensing remote and an infrared eye that works like a camera alongside the PS3.

When the PS4 debuts, it will likely integrate these features in a more natural way. This means using motion—sensing technology while playing online with friends is more likely than ever—not to mention it opens up a whole new world for thrilling and immersive games.

Just complete the sign up, follow the outlined steps, and you can get a brand new PS4! You can test out all the new system abilities, and can even send in your review (some select reviews may even appear on our site). Which brings us to the best part of all—you get to keep the PS4 forever!

Obviously we have a limited supply, and if for any reason the PS4 is not available (or you simply change your mind) you can keep the cash equivalent of $999 USD. We will update system specs, price, and availability as more official news is released, so be sure to check back often.

09/12/2012: The PlayStation 4 is confirmed! Except it's not called the PlayStation 4—not yet, anyway. But yes, Sony admitted it's in the works. This is no surprise, since Sony is certainly in competition with Microsoft to bring up its next generation gaming console to the market. When the PlayStation 3 was released five years ago, it was sold out in almost every store, and as of June 31, 2011 there were more than 51 million units sold.

The Sony PlayStation 4 is said to be made of eco-friendly materials. The gaming console is expected to be made up to 60% of recyclable materials. Apart from that, it will also have an "Eco Start" feature, which will allow gamers to save and resume games, without having to switch off the console.

Additionally, it is choreographed to switch off every 30 minutes of no activity. The interesting part is that during this time, the console will self-charge automatically from a rechargeable cell. This not only saves energy, but also maintains and extends the life of the console.

The Sony PlayStation 4 will have full 3D support with 4K2K compatibility, and supports 3D Blu-Ray. It is enabled to synchronize with Sony Ericson, and also synchronize with the Sony Bravia. The Sony Entertainment Network (SEN), formerly called Qriocity, will also be included in the console.

It's possible that how the PlayStation 3 fares in the current console war may also determine the release date of the PS4, for a couple of reasons. If the system continues to flounder in 3rd place in the console wars, failing to generate the revenue which was initially expected of it, Sony may be far more eager to cut their losses and rush the PS4 to market sooner rather than later, possibly as early as late 2011.

If the PS3 does indeed fail to make ground on the Wii and Xbox 360, it may also convince Sony to try and jump the gun on the next generation console wars and get their system out the door first. Both the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2, which dominated their generations of the console wars, came to market at the same time or earlier than their competition. The PlayStation 1 was launched just after the Sega Saturn, and well before the Nintendo 64, while the PlayStation 2 was released before both the Xbox and Nintendo Gamecube.

The Evolution of PlayStation®

ps one

PlayStation®1

Released in July 2000, only months before the PS2, this is the original slimline version of the PlayStation console. The smaller design was so successful that Sony has continued this practice with all of its models to date. The PS1 went on to outsell all its competitor that year, including the PS2.

Little known fact: Sony's first steps into gaming came courtesy of its current competitor. Sony was to partner with Nintendo in creating a CD-based expansion for the Super Nintendo. The very first PlayStation would have been a powerful collaboration between two Japanese giants, but a controversial split between the two left Sony sidelined, bitter, and determined to beat Nintendo at its own game.

ps 2

PlayStation®2

Released in 2000, a full year before the Xbox, the PS2 is part of the sixth generation consoles, and is backwards compatible with most original PlayStation games. Like the PS1, it featured a slimmer redesign, but it was also marketed as a media center with the ability to play DVDs and CDs. It is the most successful console in the world, and in 2005 it became the fastest console to reach 100 million units shipped.

Little known facts: The PlayStation 2 was quite cutting-edge upon release. Not only was it the first system to use DVD technology, it is the first system to have graphic capability better than that of the leading-edge personal computer at the time of its release. Since availability was initially limited due to manufacturing delays, people were paying as much as $1,000 to purchase one Ebay.

ps 3

PlayStation®3

Released in November 2006, the PS3 is the third and current console in the series. Part of the seventh generation consoles, it competes with the Wii and Xbox 360. It's the first in the series to offer the use of motion controls in games, through the use of wireless controllers. The PS3 was also the first to offer Blu–ray Disc, full HD graphics, and Internet browsing. Initially offered in 20GB to 320GB models, currently it's only available in the 160GB or 320GB versions. Like its predecessors, it offered a slimmer redesign, and as of December 2010 has sold 41.5 million units.

Little known facts: The PS3 sold out within 24 hours upon its release in Japan. It met the same frenzy for the American release, but unfortunately it also incited a few isolated acts of violence. Reports surrounding the release include a customer shot, campers robbed at gunpoint, customers shot in a drive-by shooting with BB guns, and 60 campers fighting over 10 systems.

PlayStation fun facts:

1. More than half of PS3 owners tout a gaming library in the double digits

2. 1 out of 5 gamers have played a PS3 game for 10 or more straight hours

3. Chips and pizza ranked high as preferred gaming snacks, but 1 out 3 PlayStation gamers choose not to snack at all for total concentration

4. Forty percent of PS3 gamers cannot be in a relationship with a partner who gets in the way of their gaming

5. Most PlayStation gamers would rather give up social networking sites, cell phones, or fantasy sports leagues for an entire year than give up playing video games

Will history repeat itself?

It doesn't take a math whiz to figure out that Sony generally releases its PlayStation consoles according to a fairly rigid schedule. A quick look at the history of the debut dates of previous versions of the game console makes it clear that a pattern does exist. Think about it: The original PlayStation debuted in Japan near the end of 1994; it premiered around the rest of the world in early 1995.

The wild success of the original PlayStation secured its future. The PS2, which turned out to be even more popular than its predecessor, came out in 2000 - six years after the release of the original PlayStation. The PS3 first hit the scene in 2006, which was six years after the PS2. It stands to reason, then, that the Sony PS4 will first see the light of day sometime in 2012. Although Sony's CEO has implied that the "shelf life" of the PS3 is ten years instead of six, no one truly believes that Sony will wait until 2016 to release its next highly anticipated game console.

All Signs Point to a 2012 Release

Just about everyone, with the exception of the CEO of Sony, expects the PS4 to be released sometime in 2012. As an interesting side note, the CEO of a graphics development company has hinted that this will be the case. Cevat Yerli, the CEO of Crytek, was interviewed during last year's Game Developers Conference in Germany. In the interview, Yerli noted that Crytek's wildly anticipated CryEngine3 graphics engine would be debuting in 2012. When asked whether this was being done in anticipation of the Sony PS4, Yerli demurred and said that he couldn't discuss the topic any further.

With most things, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. It simply wouldn't make sense for Sony push back the release of the PS4 by four full years. The PS3 continues to lag behind the Wii and the Xbox 360, too, which is undoubtedly intensifying Sony's desire to release an exciting new game console. Assuming that the company is currently working on the Sony PS4, which it surely is, a 2012 release date seems perfectly feasible. By the time Christmas rolls around in 2012, you should have your hands on a shiny new PS4.

PS4® and 3D TV: Love at
First Sight

PS4 and 3D TV are the perfect marriage of next-generation technology. You can bet the PS4 is built specifically to support and enhance 3D technology—though we do anticipate two different modes, so it's compatible with both 3D and non–3D televisions.

No one knows whether the 3D craze will still be in full swing when the PS4 debuts. At any rate, Sony isn't going to hedge its bets in that department. As a result, the new Blu-ray format will pave the way for game developers to unleash the most cutting-edge 3D technology possible. If the PS4 can corner the 3D market through innovative technologies, it could easy surpass the new Wii and Xbox systems over the long run. The best part is that the addition of 3D functionality shouldn't dramatically increase the cost of these discs.

The good news is, like we said, you won't need a 3D television to enjoy the new 3D effects—so no need to run out and update your TV. While a 3D television will certainly offer added depth and realism, Sony was careful to design 3D games that work on your non-3D set.

As far as whether you'll need 3D glasses, there is some discussion speculating that each console with come with a pair—though it may depend on your set whether you actually need them. However, a new technology has been made available over the last couple of years which aims to present a 3D picture without the need of glasses. Just how advanced the graphics will be remains to be seen.

The PlayStation® 4 Takes Control

What to expect from the new PS4® controller:

All hail the almighty controller. It's your link to the game, quite literally putting the power in your hands. We think Sony could take a few different directions with this, but you can bet motion sensing technology will be integrated. We may also see a Dual Shock 4, possibly with its own motion sensing as well.

page4_left_image

This sudden, increased importance which is now being placed on controllers leads to obvious questions about the PlayStation 4, and the road Sony will take to deliver the action to their players. Will they release a convention controller in addition to some form of motion controller? What features will these two devices have? Or will they ditch one or the other entirely and focus on just one aspect of gaming? Our sources indicate that it wouldn't make sense for Sony to drop one or the other, so expect to see both—or maybe even one hybrid.

The Sony PS4 is expected to be different than anything that anyone has ever seen. For that reason, there's a lot of breathless talk about sleek new controllers that will boggle the mind. While there are sure to be some amazing changes with the next generation PlayStation, it's highly unlikely that Sony will ditch its tried-and-true controller on the new console. The PlayStation controller has changed very little through the years. It is ergonomically designed for easy game play. Most people have no problem at all with handling the controller for hours on end. As the old adage says: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The PlayStation®
Games

It's a guarantee that the PS4 will be loaded with bells and whistles, but you can expect the real star of the show to be the motion gaming aspect. PS4 is going to have improved motion sensing gaming, creating a platform for thrilling and immersive games, plus playing online with friends with motion sensing technology.

No one knows whether the 3D craze will still be in full swing when the PS4 debuts. At any rate, Sony isn't going to hedge its bets in that department. As a result, the new Blu-ray format will pave the way for game developers to unleash the most cutting-edge 3D technology possible. The best part is that the addition of 3D functionality shouldn't dramatically increase the cost of these discs.

Click to Begin

So what else should we expect for PS4 games? More accessibility and a wider target audience. Wii has done an excellent job at roping in women players, but PS3 doesn't offer games that appeal to most women. They have already said the future will have games correcting that, but we wonder, how so? By integrating easier user interfaces, by making frilly titles, or by add more central female characters? We know there will be 3D gaming, judging by the PS 3D Monitor, and sensor motion because of the PS Move, and it's only a matter of time before more details are revealed.

It's also of note that the PlayStation 4 could be the first console that won't require disks, or a physical game at all. There will still be a disk drive, but with the increasing popularity of downloading games combined with the lower cost, we expect you won't be using it very much. However it is backwards compatible, so you can continue to enjoy all your current favorites on the new PS4.
